In Colorado’s Pitkin County, the Gammel Damm residence by CCY Architects is a modern homage to the Scandinavian cabin, seamlessly melding with the rugged backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. The residence, inspired by the Norwegian concept of hygge, offers a warm, inviting retreat that beautifully integrates into its 12-acre natural setting.

Conceived as a family base-camp, Gammel Damm transitions from a cozy one-bedroom cabin into a spacious haven for up to 14 guests. Its design, an ode to simplicity and warmth, is underscored by the Scandinavian sensibilities in the finishing selections and architectural details. The residence’s tranquil interiors, adorned with natural materials and earthy tones, reflect the serene beauty of its surroundings.

The dwelling’s architecture follows the terrain’s gentle slopes, utilizing wooden cladding and extensive glass to forge a deep connection with the landscape. CCY Architects’ design draws inspiration from a beloved Norwegian cabin, echoing decades of familial gatherings and the timeless allure of mountain living.

Spanning 4,942 square feet, Gammel Damm comprises a main structure and a guest wing, connected by an enclosed bridge. Its layout, extending along an east-west axis, captures panoramic views of the Snowmass Creek Valley and the enveloping mountains. The architects eschewed a single, imposing structure for a series of boxy volumes united under a sloping roof, mirroring the land’s natural gradient.

Pre-finished cedar and charred wood envelop the exterior, while large windows flood the interiors with light, immersing inhabitants in the wild terrain. The home is a canvas of contrasting textures: oak in various forms graces walls and fixtures, while concrete floors offer a cool counterpoint to the wood’s warmth.

Among its distinctive features is a stone-covered fireplace seen here. These elements embody CCY Architects’ signature style of creating contemporary homes that respect and enhance their natural settings, crafting an experience of living in harmony with nature.
