The 2024 BMW R 1250 RS

BMW’s boxer-engined sport touring bike, the 2024 BMW R 1250 RS, makes it easy to cruise long distances on summer roads, with a comfortable riding position and just the right mix of tech and safety systems.

Colorado’s reputation as a magical setting for summertime motorcycling calls for a modern bike that’s able to comfortably eat up the miles on a long road trip. And that’s where the BMW R 1250 RS sport touring motorcycle offers a right-sized mix of power, technology, and a ride height and position that encourages longer days in the saddle but is still loads of fun on canyon curves.

Powered by a liquid-cooled, 1,254-cc, 2-cylinder, four-stroke boxer engine with 136 horsepower teamed with a six-speed transmission and shaft drive, the RS provides copious but smooth power for both mountain passes and freeway cruising. A 32-inch seat height and adjustable tubular handlebars help create a relaxed riding position, aided by a tall windscreen to help fend off rain. LED headlamps, a 6.5-inch digital instrument panel, USB and 12-volt charging outlets, and available BMW navigation— plus keyless ignition—all make for a modern platform for fun-filled, multi-day outings on high country roads.

Like many modern bikes, the R 1250 RS mixes the exhilaration of a 3.3-second 0–60 time with a range of safety systems, including anti-lock braking with Brembo calipers and varied electronic riding modes, including a fuel-saving eco setting. Optional packages add rear skid control, electronic chassis damping, or even clutchless shifting assist. You can also gear up with side panniers for even longer journeys over the warmer months. A heated seat and optional heated grips will also be welcome on chilly morning outings.
