The Scene

Ultreia occupies a cozy corner of Union Station that spills onto a lovely, planter-lined, heated patio. You don’t have to snag one of the comfy bar seats to enjoy what might be the most gourmand-friendly happy hour in town; it’s “Tapas Happy Hour” throughout the two-level Spanish/Portuguese restaurant.

What to drink

Choose from a $5 list that includes a house red, white, or rosé; a house-made sangria; gin tonic, Ultreia’s specialty cocktail; or vermouth—or opt for a $2 short pour (a 10-ounce glass) of the day’s beer.

What to eat

The list of eight $3 tapas represents a delectable, shareable sample of Ultreia’s menu. We tried: the melt-in-yourmouth Bikini, a grilled mini-sandwich oozing with manchego, jamón serrano, and truffle mayo; Pan con Tomate, a smaller version of a menu item made of pan de cristal (an exquisitely light bread) topped with tomato, olive oil, and salt; Pulpo Gallego, stunningly tender octopus; the must-have Piquillo Rellenos (peppers stuffed with Tetilla cheese); and the star of the table, Tacos de Lechuga (a mushroom ceviche scooped onto little gems leaves). Look for a flavor-packed fried shrimp trio we’re hoping will join the list this spring.
