TUYA Girl Creates Haircare for Outdoor Adventures

Born in Colorado and shaped by adventure, TUYA, Girl creates haircare for women who would rather be outside than in the beauty aisle.

The idea began in the salon chair. TUYA, Girl founder and hairstylist Darby Brown kept seeing the aftermath of a life well lived: hair that came in dry, brittle, and overexposed after ski seasons, river days, desert trips, and long hours on the trail.

As a former creative director for a large salon, Darby had spent years testing professional products and paying close attention to ingredients, formulas, and performance. It became more personal while traveling through Latin America. Constantly outdoors and on the move, she struggled to keep her own hair healthy through sun, dry air, and changing climates. When she moved to Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley, those same struggles started showing up in the stories of the women in her chair.

They were women with layered lives: the kind who might spend a morning outside and still have a full day waiting afterward. They cared about their hair and what they put on their bodies, but they did not want a complicated routine. They wanted something intuitive, effective, and easy enough to actually keep up.

One client helped bring that vision into focus. She arrived with platinum blonde hair and a bold lip color, and as they talked, Darby learned she was a ski patroller who worked with explosives for avalanche mitigation. Her hair had taken a beating from both the color and the conditions. What stayed with Darby was the whole picture: a woman who was rugged and feminine, practical and expressive, tough and completely herself.

That spirit became the foundation for indie honey gloss, TUYA, Girl’s debut product. Designed as a pre-adventure treatment, it’s applied before a day outside, then washed out afterward. Instead of waiting to repair damage, it prepares hair for exposure to sun, wind, altitude, water, and everyday wear.

The formula is intentionally streamlined. Darby avoided silicones and chose nourishing oils like prickly pear seed, baobab, kalahari melon, cacay, and broccoli seed oil, paired with strengthening lupine. Mountain wildflowers and desert botanicals round out the lineup, reflecting the resilience of plants that thrive in harsh environments.

Even the name carries a sense of ownership. TUYA stands for “take up your adventure,” while “tuya” means “yours” in Spanish, a nod to Darby’s travels and the idea that beauty should make women feel more like themselves.

It is a brand built for women who come home sun-kissed, trail-worn, and glad they went. At its core, TUYA, Girl is for women who want haircare that fits their lives, not the other way around.
