Dunton River Camp encapsulates everything Colorado travelers dream of. There’s an awe-inspiring beauty throughout the untamed, all-inclusive property roughly 32 miles outside of Telluride in southwestern Colorado near the Four Corners. Here, the experience is anything but rugged. Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape for two or a secluded retreat for the whole family, you’ll find accommodations for 16 set in the acclaimed seasonal camp, open June to mid-October.

Spanning nearly 500 acres of Colorado’s awe-inspiring landscape amid the San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Rockies, the stunning property wows upon arrival. Red rocks and rolling horse-filled pastures lend a Southwestern sense of place and frame the mountain views that open before you, where the West Fork of the Dolores River snakes through the postcard-perfect scene. Here, guests find easy access to hiking and biking trails and trout-filled fishing holes, easily reached by the pair of mountain bikes that come with each tent.

Overall, the level of service and style at this idyllic escape is on par with the brand’s lauded Dunton Hot Springs just four miles upstream. That romantic, remote retreat (where Emily in Paris actor Lily Collins had her wedding) is more high profile than this off-the-grid camp, but both properties have unique and equal appeal.

“We once had a Ralph Lauren photographer shoot at both Dunton Hot Springs and Dunton River Camp. They put the crew at the river camp because they thought that the cabins at the hot springs were better than the tents at the camp,” says Christina Rossi, an EVP with Dunton Management Company. “Once they arrived, the photographer and some of the models were so upset they weren’t staying here instead.”

In the Farm House and lounge tent as well as the eight tented guest rooms, you’ll find all the trappings of a luxury resort. The secluded tent platforms, accessed via a small bridge, are set on the river banks and amid the trees. Inside, sumptuous king-sized beds, en-suite bathrooms with six-foot soaker tubs and showers, dual vanities, plush furnishings, cowhide rugs, and vintage art prints await.

Eat & Drink

All meals and alcohol are included with the price of booking and served family-style in the Farm House, a beauty of warm pine beadboard bathed in light from the ample windows. Guests can gather by the fire or outside on the wrap-around deck for farm-to-table meals that draw inspiration from the surrounding flora, fauna, and indigenous culture. There’s no set menu, as the chefs are inspired by what’s in season, and they are happy to tailor-make meals for those with dietary restrictions or particular palates. The wine and spirit lists span the globe and pair well with an evening of dinner and discussion among new friends.

This season, an expanded roster of activities complement existing offerings, such as the chance to unwind in the riverside sauna and enjoy cocktails by the fire, that already made this a stand-out resort for those seeking a luxurious connection with nature. New weekly activities include an introduction to fly tying, group yoga, healing sound baths, mountain biking, and a family-friendly experience with the resort’s new ponies. A full menu of à la carte programming includes excursions in river panning, rock hounding, horseback riding, guided fly-fishing, rafting, and more. In the spa tent perched on the edge of Cresto Meadow, indulge in hot stone massages, full-body scrubs, and enjoy the oversized hot tub and sauna. Exclusive tours of the nearby Sutcliffe Vineyards can also be arranged.
