The kitchen is often called the heart of a home. In this Denver residence, it’s so much more. Doubling as a dining area, mudroom, and cozy fireside retreat, this space is where a busy young family of five spends most of their time.
Tasked with increasing both functionality and storage in a dated kitchen and sitting room, interior designer Jennifer Rhode took a thoughtful approach to blending traditional elements with modern updates while maintaining an eclectic, inviting aesthetic. Her redesign embraces the original kitchen’s classical elements, including Shaker cabinetry, molding details, and marble countertops reflective of the home’s Georgian architecture, while incorporating sleek, flat-panel cabinets that enhance storage without disrupting the kitchen’s flow. Instead of matching the original cabinetry, Rhode opted to complement it, painting all the cabinets the same crisp white to create a seamless look. New floor-to-ceiling storage by the kitchen table and in the mudroom keeps household necessities tucked away, bringing a sense of calm to the space.
The sitting area by the fireplace also received a fresh update, with built-in cabinetry adding both style and practicality. The cement-toned fireplace surround maintains a neutral base, while a curated selection of midcentury modern furniture, like the owner’s molded wood side chair, ties the space together.
A striking feature of the new design is the commissioned horizontal abstract painting by Sarah Kinn. Rhode, who appreciates Kinn’s bold and joyful use of color, placed the painting as a focal point in the kitchen. Vibrant pops of red from the West Elm side table and curated bookshelf accessories add further personality to the neutral backdrop.
In the newly transformed space, beauty meets purpose. Thoughtful cabinetry solutions provide ample storage without overwhelming the room, while carefully selected furnishings and artwork create an atmosphere of warmth and sophistication.
