The client was a single man who was pilot: That’s about all TAB design team Trish Bonney and Bryonna Williams had to go on when they agreed to refurnish a Golden penthouse condo stuck in the ’80s. He flew off to Florida after the meeting and wouldn’t be returning for a couple of months.
“He gave us free rein,” says Bonney. “We knew he loved the outdoors. And he told us it was important for him to have a comfortable sofa. That was about all the info we got.”

Bonney and Williams were enamored with the client’s view of the foothills and the School of Mines’ iconic, hillside “M,” so they decided to give his bachelor pad a contemporary mountain feel, enlivening the typical neutral masculine color palette with a bright blue spark. The custom sectional sofa from Pasha (N.C.) is framed in that blue, with a lighter shade covering the seat cushions, and faces a fireplace opposite.

The designers then varied textures and finishes to add interest: Bayur wood and iron on the coffee table (New Pacific Direct), demolition hardwood and black steel on the dining table (Four Hands), copper and black metal on the floor lamp (Mercana), and sawn grain Indian hardwood on the Mercana shelving units flanked by Harp and Finial mirrors. They layered a cowhide rug infused with gold paint over a natural fiber area rug containing silver metallic yarn (both from Surya), and incorporated artwork by the client’s daughter. In the client’s bedroom, airplane artwork from Leftbank is featured above the headboard.
“He was very proud of being a pilot in the military, and a commercial pilot after that,” Bonney says.

“We wanted to pay homage to that.” With the walls painted a neutral cream trimmed in white, the space has transformed into one that is light and airy, a touch industrial, and a place where a bachelor can entertain comfortably. Says Bonney: “He loves it.”
