The property—on a steep slope with panoramic views of Denver Country Club’s course—was spectacular. The aging house on that site, not so much. So, the couple who bought it asked the team at Boulder’s HMH Architecture and Interiors to remodel the home into a retreat that would allow them to experience the Colorado lifestyle, entertain outdoors, and provide a welcoming environment for their grown children.
Starting from the original foundation, HMH created a private sanctuary that maximizes the vista and celebrates the outdoors while serving as a retreat from the surrounding city. The award-winning home features sculptural interior and exterior lines, expansive glass, and a neutral backdrop that highlights the couple’s art collection. Sustainable elements include solar panels, a geothermal HVAC system, and radiant floor heating and cooling.
A horizontal, curving zinc wall, which will patina over time, wraps from the front of the home into the patio area. “This curve really helped us capture the views,” says Lindsay Beukhof, HMH architect and project manager. “The views from the property are absolutely stunning. You have the river down below, the golf course in the middle ground, then downtown Denver, and in the far distance, you see the Rocky Mountains.”

The home’s golf course setting adds a layer of serenity. Beukhof especially loves an adjacent bridge that traverses a golf course stream. “The course maintains these gorgeous flowers all summer, and the bridge is lined with beautiful, colorful blossoms.”
On the home’s exterior, wood slats provide visual interest and create a private boundary from the adjacent road. Cedar ceiling beams form a trellis canopy for sun protection, while built-in lighting and heaters extend the space’s seasonal and nighttime use. An oversized three-panel sliding glass door opens from the living area to the patio.
“We wanted to create a seamless connection between the living room and the outdoor space,” says Beukhof. “So, the furniture continues the cozy, comfortable, yet neutral style in the living room.” The patio’s contemporary vibe sets the stage for entertaining with abundant seating and additional lighting and heating options.
