With fall officially here, it’s time to not only switch up your skincare regimen, but also update your makeup drawer. And one of the best ways to indulge in the new season is with lipstick. A new lipstick color and finish is an easy, affordable way to brighten the face and update any look.
What’s currently having a moment in beauty is the matte, nude lip (thank you, 1990s!). It’s a classic look that anyone can wear—you just need the right shade of nude in your lip kit for your skin tone, and well-hydrated lips. To get the look, we enlisted the help of Denver-based makeup artist and personal beauty consultant Lillian Marsh, who suggests hydrating at night and selecting a sumptuous matte color for daytime.
Clean Beauty
Try Clove + Hallow Lip Velvet ($19), a liquid lipstick that dries down to a matte finish and doesn’t transfer all day. Available at Aillea.
Nighttime Care
For night care, Marsh suggests sleeping in a thick gloss like MAC’s Clear Lipglass ($19). “It sounds extreme,” she says, “but in dry climates it will keep your lips happy and healthy.” Available at MAC Cosmetics.
Perfect for Hydration
If you prefer less pigment and more hydration, Yves Saint Laurent Beauty’s Glossy Stain ($38) can’t be beat for a tinted, long-lasting, high-shine lip. Available at Neiman Marcus.
For a Modern, Soft Look
Try Charlotte Tilbury’s The Super Nudes Matte Revolution in Supermodel ($34) is ideal for a universally flattering, nude-rose hue. Available at Nordstrom.
Creating A Rich Matte Lip
To create a rich, matte lip Marsh likes Two Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick ($22), an opaque, longwearing formula that sets and stays put even under a mask. Try it in Cool Girl for light skin, Sell Out for medium and Finesse for deep tones. Available at Two Faced, Sephora, and Ulta.
