The Golden Bear Becomes a Symbol of the Vail Valley

Some mountain souvenirs fade. The Golden Bear does not. What began as a single design—a 14K yellow gold Mama Bear—has grown into one of the most recognizable symbols of the Vail Valley. Then came the Baby Bear, and from there, a legacy took shape: one strongly rooted in craftsmanship and connection.

Today, The Golden Bear is more than a jewelry brand; it’s an unofficial emblem of the Vail Valley. Visitors discover it while wandering the village, often leaving with a piece that becomes a wearable memory of their time in Colorado. For locals, the sentiment runs deeper. Many designs are created right in Vail, crafted by skilled artisans in a professional studio; a rarity in the world of fine jewelry where production is often far removed from place.

The brand draws heavily from the Western lifestyle and the enduring pull of the mountains, but its true distinction lies in what happens after a piece leaves the store. Susan Ferrari, store manager and buyer for The Golden Bear, speaks of unexpected moments: “We often hear stories from our customers as to how they connected with a stranger in a different part of the world. Friendships have formed while eating lunch in an Australian café, when they notice the person at the table next to them is wearing a 14K Papa Bear necklace. These little bears truly bond people together.”

Over the years, these pieces have taken on lives of their own. Gifted, inherited, carried across states and continents. They mark milestones and, for many, serve as a small but constant reminder of home.

As The Golden Bear celebrates 50 years, its future looks much like its past in a beautiful way. Although the brand has grown immensely over the years, The Golden Bear will remain locally owned and operated as a small business, a prideful nod to the brand’s beginnings and the community that shapes it.
