Any ancient memories of Volvos being a bit bland and boxy are washed away entirely in the glossy XC60 Recharge AWD Ultimate Black Edition. Here, the innovative Swedish brand mixes a high-output and real-world-friendly plug-in hybrid system with a very sexy look. Volvo’s XC60 compact luxury crossover has become one of the brand’s most popular choices, as it’s just the right size for five-person comfort but still mixes splashy design with fully updated technology.

Volvo was an early adopter of electrified technology and it’s now integrated into every model in the lineup. In the XC60’s case, a 312-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and a 143-horsepower electric generator blend together for a feisty 455 horsepower combo, giving the vehicle ample uphill pulling and passing power, plus all-wheel drive, all smoothed with an optional air suspension system. The 18.8-kilowatt-hour battery can also be quickly charged by plug at home, turning the XC60 into a short-range, all-electric commuter.

While other carmakers have added blackedout models to their lineups, the XC60 Black Edition is one of the most striking in the business, with its almost glowing Onyx black paint job accentuated by darkened trim, glossblack logos, and striking 21-inch black wheels. Inside, it’s a beautiful and simple treatment with ultra-supportive, two-tone leather seating, available with optional massage functions. A horizontally oriented 12.3-inch touchscreen handles most of the vehicle’s climate and information controls via an easy-to-use Google operating system. There’s also a tasteful Orrefors crystal shift knob, a twist-activated starter knob, and an optional Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system.
