For better or worse, this year has seen a renewed scrutiny on the increasingly international origins of our vehicles. EV enthusiasts looking for a fully American-made option might want to turn their attention to Lucid and its comfortably long-range, all-electric automobiles.
Sleek, sexy, and powerful, these California-designed, Arizona-built EVs include both sedans and a new SUV. They provide an astonishing array of high-output performance choices and a minimum range of 400 miles or more, with ultra-fast charging as an added option.
Lucid’s Air sedans, which start at $70,000 for the Pure model, are long, low, and impressive family vehicles that mix ahead-of-the-curve tech with a fun-to-drive feel, plus available all-wheel drive. The Pure’s single-motor, 430-hp boost is tangible, and other multi-motor combinations stretch that to more than 1,200 horsepower. There’s no ignition key; when you walk up to the vehicle, it lights up, pops out its hidden door handles, and is fully ready for you to roll once you sit inside.
The Air’s cabin has a glass cockpit, a sweeping 34-inch touchscreen, and a retractable 12.5-inch central touchscreen. With the Air Pure’s standard 406-mile range, you can cruise to a destination as far away as Glenwood Springs and make it most of the way back home; the extended-range Grand Touring model is good for up to 512 miles of electric cruising.
Meanwhile, the three-row Gravity SUV promises a range of up to 450 miles and space for as many as seven passengers, plus an impressive 120 cubic feet of cargo space. Deliveries of the $95,000 Grand Touring model, with standard AWD and as much as 828 horsepower, began this spring, and the $80,000 Touring model is expected later this year. Like the Air, it’s stacked with oversized screens, a twenty-two-speaker sound system, and a built-in video security setup.
