Designer Interview
How would you describe your design style and point of view?
At Vertical Arts, the cornerstone of our design process is listening. By understanding each client’s unique needs and opportunities from the very beginning, we craft a unique point of view for each project. Rather than forcing a project into a predetermined style, we focus on the unique story of each place and the people who inhabit it. The result is a design that feels timeless, highly personalized, and completely at home in its surroundings.
What drew you to this space, and what excited you most about designing it?
I was drawn to the office space because of its spatial relationship to the rest of the home. Sitting directly across the living room from the light filled courtyard, I saw an opportunity to create visual tension through contrast. Rather than competing with the brightness and openness of the courtyard, we intentionally made the office a darker, more intimate space that could create a richer and more layered experience throughout the home.
Describe the vision for your room in three words—and why those words matter.
Contrast. Intimacy. Connection.
Contrast speaks to the relationship between the darker, more intimate office and the light-filled living spaces beyond. Intimacy was important in creating a space that feels focused and enveloping within the larger openness of the home. Connection ties it all together, the office is designed not as an isolated room, but as a visual part of the living spaces and an experience through the entry sequence of the home.
