Designer Interview
How would you describe your design style and point of view?
My design point of view is refined, approachable, and rooted in an organic modern philosophy with a deep connection to nature. I’m continually inspired by the mountains and by my childhood growing up near the ocean, two landscapes that shaped my appreciation for natural materials, texture, movement, and a sense of calm.
I’m drawn to timeless architecture, layered natural materials, and thoughtful contrast, creating spaces that feel collected, comfortable, and connected to their surroundings. I believe the most successful interiors balance beauty with purpose, combining thoughtful details, functionality, and durability with warmth, texture, and a sense of discovery.
What drew you to this space, and what excited you most about designing it?
The incredible location across from Washington Park and the unique architecture of this elevated garage ADU immediately drew me in. ADU stands for Accessory Dwelling Unit, and I love their flexibility. They can function as a guest suite, office, studio, rental, multigenerational space, gym, entertaining space, or private retreat.
Here, I was excited to take on the challenge of a 500-square-foot space with deep barrel-vaulted dormers that capture 360-degree views of the tree canopy, creating an immersive “urban treehouse.” I love the idea of creating something that feels inviting and livable, while still feeling special through layers of craftsmanship and intentional detail.
Describe the vision for your room in three words—and why those words matter.
- Biophilic: A design style that brings nature into the home through elements like sunlight, plants, raw stone, and warm woods to create healthier, more refreshing spaces. The ADU demonstrates this by weaving organic textures and botanical details throughout its interior, turning a spot among the mature trees into a peaceful escape from the city.
- Refined: Thoughtful details including curved cabinetry, custom art, tailored architectural features, and ambient 360-degree lighting that give the space charming character, quality craftsmanship and natural light from all angles.
- Unexpected: Moments of discovery keep the space from feeling predictable, from softened Art Deco influences and jewel-like tile to traditional elements reinterpreted through a modern lens.
