KATA by Design is a boutique residential design practice based in Boulder, Colorado.

Our work seamlessly integrates architecture and interior design to accomplish the unique vision of each client. From ground-up new builds to renovations, our collaborative process—executed by our company principals—provides a more personalized approach to the design of your home. Inspired by the Japanese concept of KATA—meaning form, shape, or pattern—our work is rooted in thoughtful intentionality, blending function and aesthetics to create enduring spaces tailored to each client’s lifestyle, often with an emphasis on environmentally conscious and place-based design solutions.

Designer Interview

How would you describe your design style and point of view?

My design style is bound within the natural beauty of materials and the artistry of craftsmanship, in service to the people who inhabit a home and their experience of a beautiful, ordinary life-well-lived.

At KATA by Design, whether we are working on a high-luxury home or a small remodel, we approach every project through this lens, seamlessly integrating architecture and interiors to create homes that feel deeply personal, enduring, related to place, and focused on connection.  Warmth, function, and refinement are the goal rather than a particular style.

What drew you to this space, and what excited you most about designing it?

We are thrilled to be awarded the kitchen with its sweet little breakfast nook and the supporting areas of the service pantry and mudroom because these are the real soul of the home.  These areas are where nourishment, gathering, conversation, and the bustling of life naturally unfold, so we wanted to design an elevated but genuinely livable space to support the truly good things that will happen here.

To get started we imagined the connection with family and friends, pursuing culinary craft, and the overall healthful enrichment of ordinary daily lives.  Within the context of the showhouse’s modern colonial architecture, we are especially excited to achieve these concepts by balancing timeless detailing with a contemporary and warm restraint.

Describe the vision for your room in three words—and why those words matter.

Intentional. Approachable. Lasting.

These words reflect the atmosphere we hoped to create in these spaces.

Intentional – materials, their proportion, and every functional aspect have been carefully considered.

Approachable – this is the emotive essence; we want the look, touch, and experience to feel inviting, grounded, and warm.

Lasting – our commitment is to timelessness in style over short-lived trends and the selection of materials that are meant to age beautifully over time.
