Designer Interview

What was the overall vision for your space?
The design vision for this home began with the striking natural stone featured in the kitchen, setting the tone for an organic yet refined aesthetic. We designed the fireplace face to be both stunning and minimal—a true focal point in the space. Soft furnishings were kept in a neutral palette, rich in tactile, organic textures that invite comfort. A double sofa layout creates a purposeful, welcoming arrangement that enhances both flow and functionality. The statement light fixture draws the eye upward, accentuating the room’s soaring ceilings. The horse artwork subtly nods to the Polo Club neighborhood’s heritage, while the overall design balances luxurious elements with a warm, livable feel.

What’s your favorite thing about your space?
Definitely the fireplace face – the organic, soft curves of the striking natural stone hold so much visual interest and weight, but also feel soft and classic.

What advice would you give to homeowners regarding the key things to keep in mind when designing (your) space?

When designing your space—whether it’s a bedroom, living room, kitchen, or any other area—keep these key principles in mind:

  1. Function First
Start by thinking about how you’ll use the space. A beautiful room only works if it fits your daily needs. Consider flow, storage, and comfort. For example, a mudroom should be highly functional with easy-to-clean surfaces and ample organization, while a bedroom should prioritize rest and relaxation.
  2. Define Your Style, but Stay Flexible
Identify your aesthetic—modern, traditional, organic, minimal—but allow room for evolution. Don’t force trends; instead, choose timeless pieces you love and layer in personality through textiles, lighting, or art.
  3. Think in Layers
Good design comes from layering: lighting (ambient, task, accent), texture (wood, fabric, stone), and tone (color, contrast, warmth). This creates depth and interest in a space.
  4. Invest in Key Pieces
Spend more on foundational items like a sofa, dining table, or quality bedding. These anchor the space and get the most use. Save on trendier or seasonal accents that can be easily swapped.
  5. Flow and Cohesion Matter
Make sure your spaces connect visually and functionally, especially in open-concept layouts. Carrying consistent materials, colors, or textures throughout your home creates harmony and balance.
  6. Natural Light is a Game-Changer
Design around your windows. Use lighter colors and reflective materials to enhance brightness, and don’t block natural light with bulky furniture or heavy drapes unless needed for privacy or softness.
  7. Make it Personal
Your space should tell your story. Incorporate meaningful art, heirlooms, or unique finds that reflect who you are. The most beautiful spaces are those that feel truly lived-in and loved.
