Dolan Geiman and the Art of Reclaiming the American West

Dolan Geiman’s art is as much a product of the land as it is of his creative vision, drawing from the rugged beauty and history of the American West to transform discarded materials into intricate, storytelling sculptures.

Dolan Geiman draws inspiration for his art the same way he sources his materials: by exploring the rugged, untamed landscapes of the American West. After relocating from Virginia to Colorado, he reveled in the vast, inspiring scenery that matched his boundless artistic ambitions. Years of adventuring and scavenging in his new surroundings led to a collection of materials rich in history, each one waiting for a second life. Geiman began crafting mixed-media sculptures, intricately detailed with collages of paper or metal. Each piece takes weeks, even months, to complete—not counting the time spent finding the materials. We caught up with him at his home studio in Denver to learn more. Here’s what he had to say.

How would you describe your art?

“My work draws inspiration from the rugged beauty and spirit of the American West. It’s a blend of modern cowboy aesthetic with elements of folk art, nature, and rustic charm, incorporating found objects into the pieces for a sense of history and individuality. I draw inspiration from landscapes, wildlife, and the stories that come from the people and places I encounter. My art is about bringing those stories into the present.”

Why use found objects?

“They add a raw, organic quality to my pieces, bringing them to life in unexpected ways. They carry their own stories and histories, which allows me to create art that feels grounded and authentic, with a deeper connection to the world around us. I’ve collected found objects my whole life and have sourced them wherever I could pick them up: old abandoned barns, flea markets, junkyards, and discarded treasures found deep in the woods of Colorado. They come from places with history, and I enjoy giving them new life and meaning in my art.”

As someone born on the East Coast, what drew you and your art to the West?

“The West has a certain untamed spirit and aesthetic that resonates with my creative process. The open landscapes, wildlife, and history of the West have influenced my work in a profound way. It was the freedom and rawness of the West that ultimately drew me to it, both as a person and as an artist. Colorado is incredibly inspiring. It’s the perfect environment to live and create art that feels connected to the land.”

Do you take custom commissions?

“I love creating custom pieces because they allow me to connect with clients and create something truly personal. However, I also set aside time for personal projects to ensure I stay inspired.”

Where can readers see and/or purchase your art?

“My artwork is available for purchase online at dolangeiman.com, and I regularly showcase my work at art festivals and trunk shows across the country. Coming up, I will be at the Firefly Handmade Spring Market at the beginning of May, the Denver Arts Festival the weekend of May 23, and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival at the beginning of July.”
