The secret behind every stunning beauty you see in a magazine is a great hair and makeup team. Behind the lens at Denver Life Magazine’s shoots is Gina Comminello and her team from The Look Salon & Med Spa, which just upgraded its space to accommodate more services. Now located in the University Hills neighborhood, the salon features a full medical spa, 10 hairstylist stations, Comminello’s custom makeup studio, ample parking for clients and staff, excellent lighting, and stunning views. With 27 years of experience, including stints with Christian Dior, Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent, Comminello is quite the seasoned expert, so we turned to her for insight on the season’s latest trends and how to achieve them at The Look.

What are some makeup trends you are seeing/ loving?
“I am enthusiastic about current beauty trends that emphasize a clean and crisp finish. For makeup, envision a soft, romantic look with bold colors on the lips, such as cranberry and red, paired with a sheer foundation and subtle highlighting. Softly enhance the brows, complementing lighter eye shadow and a bronze color wash on the lids. Use a chocolate tone or soft black eyeliner to complete the look. And airbrush brow tinting lasts longer than traditional brow tint. We customize the color for clients, then apply the tint in very thin layers using an airbrush gun, creating a more precise edge and a gradual ombre effect, with lighter shades at the front of the brows.”

What about hair?
“Currently, soft romantic styles are in. These looks feature layered styles with long, shaggy cuts, glamorous bombshell blowouts, and loose, less structured curls.”

What are some popular med-spa treatments?
“Once you experience the results from using a medical- grade skincare system and follow the prescribed protocol, it’s hard to go back. Beauty trends start with skincare before moving on to makeup and hair. Several popular spa services cater to individuals in Colorado. These include: Aquafacial, which exfoliates, oxygenates, and hydrates the skin; radiofrequency microneedling, which stimulates collagen production and tightens the skin; BBL (broadband light therapy), which enhances complexion by treating brown and red discoloration; and weight loss programs offered under the supervision of one of our medical directors.”

You do beautiful work at our shoots, where the makeup is very natural, but the faces still pop. Any advice for achieving that look?
“Focus on enhancing your natural features. This involves selecting the right colors, blending seamlessly, and applying products to ensure long-lasting results throughout the day. I view makeup as an accessory rather than a focal point. When applied correctly, it allows features to shine through without overpowering them. And one essential step for everyone is incorporating a high-quality SPF into their skincare routine.”
