Whether you’re planning a family vacation, romantic escape, or solo adventure, Steamboat Springs delivers on every front. Just under three hours from Denver, this beloved mountain town blends laid-back charm with unforgettable outdoor experiences. Think sunshine-filled days, riverside dining, hot springs, and a buzzing arts scene—all wrapped in alpine beauty.

Happy Trails

Hikes here can range from easy strolls to rock scrambles. Whichever type of hiker you are, there is no shortage of trails.

The Vista Nature Trail lets you skip the slog up the mountain and start your hike at the best part: the top. The short, easy-to-access hike begins at the top of the gondola at Thunderhead Lodge, where hikers can pick up the 1-mile trail boasting incredible views. The loop is gentle, beautifully lined with wildflowers, and great for families, light hikers, and anyone who wants the beauty, not the burn. And when you’re done, no need to put your knees through the downhill. Simply hop back on the gondola to glide down.

Looking to really earn your summit beer? Try the Long Lake via Fish Creek Trail. This 12-mile out-and-back isn’t for the faint of foot—expect steep climbs, serious mileage, and a bit of rock scrambling to keep things exciting. The waterfall midway is tempting enough to call it quits, but push on, and you’ll be rewarded with wide-open meadows, wildflowers, mushrooms, and alpine views that are totally worth the burn.

Or, you can stay right in town and enjoy a wonderfully scenic stroll along the Yampa River. The Yampa River Core Trail is a ten-mile paved walking path that winds from the base of the ski lifts through leafy neighborhoods, ending in downtown Steamboat. Along the way, you’ll pass parks, wildflowers, and plenty of spots to fish, kayak, or just sit and soak it all in. It’s a perfect reminder that sometimes the best hikes are the ones that don’t feel like hikes at all.

Adventures to Remember

From adrenaline-pumping to muscle-relaxing, Steamboat offers adventures and activities for every traveler.

Hiking isn’t the only way to take in the mountain views. For an unforgettable perspective, float above it all with Wild West Balloon Adventures. Their early morning, two-and-a-half-hour hot air balloon rides let you soar over the Yampa Valley and surrounding peaks in total serenity. After landing, the adventure continues with a celebratory champagne toast, fresh coffee and donuts, complimentary photos, and a personalized flight certificate—because yes, you just flew a balloon over the Rockies.

But you don’t need an action-packed itinerary to get the most out of a visit to Steamboat. The Strawberry Park Hot Springs are reason enough for the trip. The mineral-rich pools stay around 104 degrees year-round, where you can soak for a couple of hours with a reservation or stay the weekend in everything from a large rustic cabin to an antique covered wagon. Massage and aquatic therapy are on offer if lounging in hot water somehow isn’t relaxing enough. Off-grid, low-key, and impossibly scenic—it’s Steamboat at its most unbothered.

Shop Local

From handmade hats to fine art galleries and generationally owned shops, Steamboats downtown is bursting with retail therapy potential.

At Steamboat Hatter, style is as personal as it is practical. Owners Kay McKenzie and Sam Daniels bring a bold, creative spirit to their hand-shaped felt hats—each one designed to reflect the rugged allure of mountain life. With fully customizable options, you can craft a hat that’s completely your own, from crown to brim to band. Built to withstand all seasons, these wearable works of art are designed for snowstorms, sunshine, and everything in between.

For a deeper dive into Western style with a side of history, head to the 120-year-old FM Light and Sons. With five generations of owners since its opening in 1905, this store has created a long-lasting legacy that will stand the test of time, with popular brands such as Carhartt, Outback Trading Co., and UGG, as well as local brands like Tree Line Candle Company, Rockmount Ranchwear, and Johnson & Held. Whether you are looking for a one-of-a-kind gift or a Western souvenir, FM Light and Sons will cater to your cowboy dreams.

Dig In

After a day of hiking, shopping, or soaking in hot springs, you’ve earned a serious meal. The only challenge? Choosing where to start.

For river views and bold flavors, head to Taco Cabo on Yampa Street. This laid-back local favorite dishes out house-roasted pork shoulder, marinated chicken, fresh cod, and vibrant veggies—all wrapped in handmade tortillas and served on the bustling riverside patio shaded by bright umbrellas and lush trees. Kick off your meal with the famous guacamole, a splash of artisanal hot sauce, and a margarita (order the orange float), and you’re golden. Friendly staff and shaded tables make it easy to linger (and even easier to come back tomorrow).

For a night that calls for a little extra sparkle—be it a celebration or just a great date—Bésame brings the heat. This Latin fusion restaurant is known for its elegant vibe, shareable tapas, and expertly crafted cocktails. Step inside and you’re wrapped in string lights, soft Latin beats, and the kind of warmth that feels like a family gathering (if your family served ceviche and mezcal). You can’t go wrong with the Aji Amarillo Ceviche—a bright, bold mix of salmon, cucumber, passion fruit, and jalapeño that tastes like summer in a bowl. Whether you’re sipping something shaken or sampling every small plate, Bésame serves up the finer things with zero fuss. Just be sure to snag a reservation—this spot stays packed all summer long.

After Hours

When the sun dips behind the mountains, Steamboat keeps the energy high with a nightlife scene that’s equal parts laid-back and lively.

At Schmiggity’s, a dance-and-music bar downtown, the party doesn’t slow down. Known for its rotating lineup of local and touring acts—think Grateful Dead jam bands, rock ‘n’ roll, and futuristic R&B—there’s always a reason to show up and stay late. Add $5 drinks, karaoke nights that turn into full-blown sing-alongs, and a packed dance floor, and you’ve got one of the town’s most electric hangouts. Mark your calendar for August 16, when Alabama-based band The Vegabonds bring their Southern rock swagger and latest album Young and Afraid to the stage. Whether you’re belting out Shania Twain or swaying to a soulful groove, Schmiggity’s delivers big on fun with zero pretense.

If you are looking for a more relaxing night out, The Press is the place to go. Locals love its Trivia Tuesdays and Bingo Wednesdays, and weekly bands bring in crowds. Its unique sound system, which is praised by artists and guests who know what to listen for, creates a crisp, clear sound that’s bound to please.
