For nearly two decades, I’ve dreamed of experiencing an Aman Resort, ever since my days at an über-luxury magazine in Miami introduced me to the brand’s world of understated luxury. This summer, that dream became a reality with a stay at Amangani in Jackson Hole—the first Aman property in the U.S.—and it exceeded every expectation. From the moment we were warmly greeted by the entire staff to the fond farewell they gave us at departure, it was flawless. Amangani is the epitome of refined mountain living, seamlessly blending its surroundings with impeccable design and service.

Amangani is perched on the edge of East Gros Ventre Butte, offering sweeping views of the Jackson Hole valley and the majestic Teton Range beyond. About 15 minutes from the town of Jackson, the resort’s location is secluded yet easily accessible, set on 6.5 acres of pristine land that makes you feel as if you’ve stumbled upon a hidden gem. The resort’s name is a combination of the Sanskrit word for “peaceful” and the Shoshone word for “home,” which is fitting. It’s a peaceful retreat that harmonizes with its natural surroundings, offering guests a luxurious escape from the world while still allowing for complete immersion in the beauty of the Wyoming landscape.

Conceived by the late architect Ed Tuttle, Amangani’s three-story structure blends seamlessly into the butte, respecting the environment as much as it elevates it. Built in 1998, the resort has aged beautifully, with its Oklahoma sandstone walls and Pacific redwood interiors growing even more captivating over time. Large, floor-to-ceiling windows dominate both the public spaces and the suites, offering panoramic views of the valley and the Tetons. Every inch of Amangani feels like it was designed to bring the outdoors in, whether you’re in the great room, which features soaring ceilings and simple, elegant furnishings, or in your private suite, where rich textures like woven cowhide chairs and faux-fur throws offer warmth and coziness.

Each of Amangani’s 40 suites is a testament to understated elegance, with wood and stone finishes that nod to the wild soul of the region. The suites are spacious, featuring high ceilings, deep soaking tubs, and private terraces that frame the breathtaking vistas outside. There’s a sense of timelessness to the decor, with rich textures and subtle tones that invite relaxation. But what truly sets Amangani apart is the seamless blend of attentive service and privacy. The staff is attentive yet unobtrusive, ensuring that every need is met without ever feeling overbearing. This balance allows guests to fully immerse themselves in the tranquility of the surroundings, whether they’re unwinding in their suite or soaking in the resort’s infinity pool.

Speaking of the pool, it’s one of the highlights of the resort. Heated year-round to a soothing 84 degrees, the pool offers a truly surreal experience. As steam rises from the water and the mountains loom in the distance, it’s not uncommon to spot elk migrating across the valley. It’s one of those moments that feel almost too perfect to be real, and yet it’s exactly the kind of magic that Amangani delivers. The resort’s spa is equally impressive, offering a range of treatments inspired by ancient healing traditions. The redwood-paneled treatment rooms exude warmth and comfort, while outdoor wellness sessions are held in a tranquil glade atop the butte. Whether you’re indulging in a private yoga session, enjoying a therapeutic massage, or experiencing an open-air sound bath, Amangani’s wellness offerings are designed to nourish both body and spirit.

In the winter months, Amangani transforms into a haven for skiers and snowboarders, offering a private ski lodge in nearby Teton Village. The ski lodge provides everything you need for a day on the slopes, from concierge services to après-ski refreshments. And after a day of adventure, there’s nothing quite like returning to the resort to warm up by the fire or take a dip in the heated pool.

Amangani offers more than just a luxurious escape; it offers an authentic connection to nature. Its elevated position provides views of ancient rock faces and verdant plains that have drawn humans for millennia. But with views like these and such serene surroundings, you may find it hard to leave the resort’s warm embrace. Whether you’re seeking adventure or simply a peaceful retreat, Amangani delivers an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left.

Eat & Drink

Found at the foot of a magnificent sweep of stairs, The Grill’s abundance of space and pared-back decor draw attention to the mountain views and sublime cuisine showcasing the region’s natural bounty. The menu is grounded in the region’s culinary traditions, with ingredients like caribou sausages, elk T-bone and bison short rib; trout and halibu;, Idaho potatoes; and Utah honeycomb all sourced from nearby farms and rivers. Menus have a seasonal focus and a global sensibility, elevating the traditional fare and culinary techniques of the West to introduce a new American cuisine. The bison tenderloin is tender and flavorful, the trout fresh and expertly prepared.

Explore

Guided by the incomparable Jared Paul, who has been with the resort for over 25 years, the in-house half-day wildlife safari through Grand Teton National Park is a masterclass in natural storytelling and wildlife observation. Paul’s encyclopedic knowledge of the local flora and fauna, combined with his engaging storytelling, kept us riveted throughout the five-hour tour. His passion for the land and its inhabitants is palpable, and his stories about the legendary grizzly bear, Bear 399—dubbed Queen of the Tetons by PBS—added a layer of intrigue and wonder to the experience. By the end of the tour, I was convinced that Bear 399 is the true celebrity of Jackson Hole, outshining even the famous residents like Harrison Ford and Sandra Bullock.
