Since the 80s, Colorado artist Lonnie Hanzon has been transforming storytelling into sensory art, crafting immersive worlds where imagination takes center stage. His work has shown up everywhere from theatrical sets to over-the-top holiday displays, all with his signature sense of wonder and play. As the annual bearer of holiday cheer, Lonnie’s seasonal installations return to Stanley Marketplace with his latest Camp Christmas creation, in partnership with DCPA Off-Center. Think of it as Lonnie’s holiday playground: over-the-top décor, themed bars, quirky surprises, and plenty of nostalgia woven through every corner. The heart of it all is the Camp Christmas Express, a walkthrough adventure packed with interactive moments designed to spark a little joy. For Lonnie, it’s never just about what you see—it’s about creating joy people can share together.
What drew you to immersive art as a storytelling medium?
“I started my art career as a magician, but I quickly found myself building props and costumes for other performers. I have always been drawn to storytelling not only in words, but with the many languages of design and craft.”
What is your creative process, from concept sketch to installation day?
“We go through a series of sketches, models, and writings, while at the same time thinking through the audience experience, operations, logistics, etc. There are a thousand factors that all need to come together seamlessly in the final presentation.”
The Camp Christmas Express takes guests from “meh” to “merry.” How did that concept come to life?
“I wanted to create an experience for the audience to strengthen their holiday spirit. I was inspired by a car wash, so the Camp Christmas Express has six dazzling cycles that you move through, from “Pre-Soak” to “Fluff & Bluff.”’

Favorite memory from a Christmas display?
“When I spy a child truly enchanted by the sights and sounds of the environment. When a child’s imagination is unleashed, they are filled with possibilities.”
Can you share a favorite design detail visitors should look for this year?
“If you find all 20 of the “Merry Badges” throughout the Marketplace, you’ll be rewarded with a special prize!”
How do partnerships like Stanley and DCPA Off-Center influence your artistic vision?
“The DCPA provides top-level production, and many of the businesses at Stanley are getting involved. We are designing three holiday-themed bars that will take over some of our favorite Stanley establishments.”
How do you see immersive art evolving?
“We’ve been in immersive art since 1986, so witnessing it gain recognition in the current age is wonderful. People will continue to seek experiences that cater to their senses, minds, and dreams. As technology advances, human connection and aspiration become more vital.”
