Overlanding culture and Porsche performance might seem like mutually exclusive terms, especially when a high-tech vehicle like the all-electric Porsche Taycan is involved. But this summer, eBay Motors, one of the innovators of online marketplaces for vehicles and accessories, brought a four-door, wagon-styled Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo EV to Eagle County’s Camp Hale to get as muddy as a Jeep while driving the rocky roads up to Homestake Reservoir.
Like the other traditional gas-powered SUVs on hand, the Taycan was outfitted with a range of backcountry-ready, fit-guaranteed accessories from eBay’s 500-million-plus part catalog. In this case, that included a Porsche Tequipment roof rack and roof tent, Porsche Aero wheels, and some ultra-beefy Nitto Nomad Grappler 20-inch off-road tires. The combination, plus the extra lift provided by the Taycan’s GPS-enabled air suspension system and a dedicated gravel mode, helped turn the long and lean Porsche into a credible, all-wheel-drive cruiser.
The Taycan Turismo remains an intriguing glimpse of the future of Porsche, with a vivid, fully digital cockpit, including touchscreens for front and rear passengers. A 277-mile range also provides ample off-the-grid travel time. As you might guess, this event’s 2022 model’s 670-horsepower Taycan build was more than capable of blinding acceleration back on pavement. For 2025, a 938-hp Turbo S variant is available, which can do 0-60 in 2.4 seconds.
The notion that EV luxury performance can also have a place on a weekend camping trip, complete with all the rooftop toys found on a Toyota Tacoma, certainly opens up some new avenues for electric adventures.
