A Tale of Two Exhibitions: Afterthoughts on curating Whistler to Cassatt: American Painters in France

Join us for the final talk before Whistler to Cassatt closes as curator Timothy J. Standring focuses on the contending agendas organizing teams face when mounting exhibitions such as our current ticketed.

In Paris, these artists observed, experimented, and learned in the private ateliers, or studios of famous French painters at the École des Beaux-Arts. While many yearned to master academic training in order to be included into the city’s annual Salon, they saw their achievements questioned upon their return to the United States.

How did these core narratives develop and change as the team considered the complex interplay of the interpretative, financial, logistical, and practical considerations of the ideally planned, and the actual exhibition itself?

Free for Museum Friends, $10 DAM members, $20 others. Note: Tickets to this talk do not include museum admission or admission to Whistler to Cassatt.
